This trek is geographically spectacular and culturally fascinating. The mountain views are sensational. You will visit typical Nepali and Tibetan styled villages during this journey. Highlighted features of this area like natural scenery, high glacier lakes, attractive flora and fauna of the majestic Himalayan range made it one of the best hiking destination. This trek will give you a unique opportunity to explore through Nepal’s untouched regions.
  • Description Edit •  Add / Share you knowledge with mates

The distance of this route is about 15 km. It takes 14-16 days. This route is going around Mt. Manaslu (8163 m) through Karkya La Pass (5160 m) - the highest point of the trek - along the valleys of Budi Gandaki, Dudh Khola and Marsyangdi rivers. The last part of it joins the Annapurna Circuit. This trek is considered to be harder than most "tea-house" treks in Nepal. The trek is remote and has no rescue facilities or opportunities to bail out if you are tired. In many places the walls of the Budhi Gandaki valley are perpendicular, so you cannot walk along the bottom of the valley. The trail is rough and steep and it often literally hangs on a bluff high above the river.
  • Getting There Edit •  Add / Share you knowledge with mates

You can reach Arughat Bazar from Kathmandu and Pokhara by buses with one or two stops. First you go to Gorkha either by the direct bus from Kathmandu, or through Abu Khaireni from both Kathanmdu or Pokhara. Then you have to take a bus from Gorkha to Arughat Bazar.
  • Red Tape Edit •  Add / Share you knowledge with mates

It's necessary to get 4 charged documents to trek in this area. Three of them are common: Annapurna and Manaslu Conservation Areas Entry Permits and TIMS Card. Entry Permits you can get in Kathmandu (Nepal Tourism Board, Bhrikutimandap, open hours 9 - 17), Pokhara (Nepal Tourism Board, Tourist Service Centre, Pardi Damside, open hours 10 - 17). You'll need 2 passport size photographs, a photo-copy of passport, form filled in, health insurance policy information. This Entry Permit is valid for single entry only and must be carried during the entire trip. Period of staying in the area is not defined. TIMS Card you can also get in NTB of Kathmandu and Pokhara. You'll need 2 passport size photographs and a photo-copy of passport. However, part of this route is close to the border with Tibet, so it's necessary to get Manaslu region special trekking permit. Moreover you can trek in this area only with a licensed nepalese guide and with a group of 2 minimum. You can get special permit only through an accredited trekking agency

This trek is suitable for a confident walker with physical robustness. It does not require any special techniques. However the previous trekking experience can be useful.
  • Tips Edit •  Add / Share you knowledge with mates

    Cellular Network: Yes (Logistics)

Mobile Internet: No (There is cell coverage in the beginning and in the end of this route (on the Annapurna Circuit). The main part of the route has no cell coverage.)

The key point of this trek is Larkya La pass (5160 m). It's better to climb it before midday as the weather can become worse at the afternoon. To do so you have to start from Samdo early in the morning, even before dawn. The way to the saddle is long and gentle with few climbs up. You should consider the snow situation when you are planning the day. It can be windy and quite cold on the pass. The route to the saddle is marked with stone pyramids and rods. On the way down from the pass there is a steep descent that can require a rope if it's slippery.

    Name (Elevation) Description
    Arughat Bazar
    570 m / 1 870 tf
This village is the starting point of the trek. There is a lovely bridge and the old part, that is located near both sides of the bridge. Hotels and lodges are located on its west side, on the way north towards the trail.
    Soti Khola
    730 m / 2 395 tf
This is a tiny village where you can have lunch or sleep.
    Machha Khola
    890 m / 2 920 tf
This is a pleasant village built on the slopes of the hill with several lodging options. This village can definitely be a convenient stopping place for the night. There’s also a "Birthing Clinic” in the village and when the doctor’s here you can get some basic medicine and treatment if needed.
    Jagat
    1 340 m / 4 396 tf
This relatively central village is the entrance to the Manaslu Conservation Area, where permits a checked. There is an elementary school where 70 children from the nearby villages get their education. It will impress you with its slate-paved streets. There’s a campsite in the lower part of the village while at least two lodges are located in its upper part.
    Philim
    1 590 m / 5 217 tf
This village is built on the mountain slope and its several lodges are located in the lower part. It is recommended to climb up the village and enjoy its houses and surrounding fields and scenery. There is the MCAP office. It also has a secondary school including accommodation for 300 children, supported by the Japanese.
    Deng
    1 860 m / 6 102 tf
The village itself is located on the mountain slope high above the trail, while the trail goes through a "lodges complex”.
    Namrung
    2 540 m / 8 333 tf
This village feels touristic, although not so much as Deng. There’s one lodge and campsite right on the "village square” and several others. There are great views of the Shringi and Ganesh Himals to the west.
    Lho
    3 180 m / 10 433 tf
This is such a beautiful village with their typical Tibetan culture. It is dominated by a large Gompa, that includes a home for more than 150 children that get their education here. The Gompa and its dormitories are located on the slopes of a hill above the village. The top of the hill is a recommended viewpoint to the first (and may be the best) view of Mount Manaslu. There are several campsites and lodges.
    Samagaon
    3 390 m / 11 122 tf
It is a lovely village, where houses are aligned in rows along a small river and face nice courtyards. The fields are located on both sides of the village above its houses level. Lodges are located north of the village, and they are full of action especially during the Manaslu climbing expeditions periods. In the afternoon you can enjoy walking through the village and see their interesting culture. You can see the view of Himal Chuli (7893 m), Ngadi Chuli (7879 m), Manaslu (8156 m) and other peaks.
    Pungyen Gompa
    4 050 m / 13 287 tf
It is located at the end of a vast grassy plateau surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. This is one of the best places to get a view of Mount Manaslu and its surroundings. The Gompa includes a small prayer hall and some monk dormitories built into the mountain. There are no accommodation facilities here but it looks like a tempting place for camping.
    Manaslu Base Camp
    4 400 m / 14 436 tf
Manaslu Base Camp is the first of a series of camps used by climbing expeditions to Manaslu. During the climbing seasons, the place is packed with tents, equipment, guides, porters and expedition members either anxious before the climb or exhausted after a climb. The surrounding mountain scenery is breath taking.
    Samdo
    3 690 m / 12 106 tf
This is a tiny lovely village located just under the majestic Samdo peak (6335 m) and the Samdo glacier. Its clustered houses are nestled behind a ridge. An afternoon walk to a viewpoint on the Pana Danda or towards Samdo Peak will offer the finest views of Manaslu.
    Dharamsala
    4 460 m / 14 633 tf
This is a wide gradual mountain slope with campsite and a lodge. The lodge was renovated in 2011 and now equipped with several double rooms and a well equipped kitchen. Short walks can lead to better views of the Larkya (6249 m) and other peaks.
    Larkya La Pass
    5 160 m / 16 929 tf
This is the Pass in the northwestern ridge of Manaslu (Larkya Himal). Its northeastern side is gentle with a minor climb up to the saddle.
    Bimthang
    3 590 m / 11 778 tf
This scenic village offers good views of Manaslu’s NE face. It is a surprising spot (a huge meadow) located in an almost impossible place between Bhimtang glacier and the slopes of Larkya Himal range. New trekking lodges are being built here.
    Gho
    2 515 m / 8 251 tf
This village is stretched along the trail. It takes about 20 minutes from the moment you enter the village till you get to the other edge of the village.
    Tal
    1 700 m / 5 577 tf
Tal is a beautiful village, mainly lodges, but also some old houses. Here the valley widens, but it's surrounded with forbidding clifs. Behind the village is a huge waterfall which makes nice photos together with the horses, Tal is famous for.
    Jagat
    1 300 m / 4 265 tf
Jagat has a community mainly of Tamang and Gurung. There are many lodges and restaurants.

Dharamsala – Larkya La (5160 m) – Bimthang. The trail along the northern moraine of the Larkya Glacier is not difficult but is long and rocky. From Dharamsala, it rises gently to a ridge followed by a long gentle climb to the moraine. A short climb leads to an ablation valley followed by a drop to pass four frozen lakes, before a gradual ascent up the glacial moraine that becomes steeper on the final pull to the summit. The descent begins from the top of the moraine near a deep gully, beyond which it drops steeply on long loose scree slopes above the Salpudanda Glacier. Later this eases onto grassy moraines beyond a rock fall around Tabuche Kharka to more level, grassy slopes. It then follows a lateral moraine into the widening valley that leads to the village of Bimthang.
