Cotopaxi can be considered as a benchmark among volcanoes that poses full set of accompanying attributes - the ideal cone, round crater rim and massive snow-white ice cap. According to all of these reasons the Cotopaxi ascent is considered by the mountaineers as a unit of measurement, "litmus test" by which all others volcanoes are compared. Well-developed tourist infrastructure, proximity to the capital city and numbers of clear days per year - everything here does to try your hand at the one of the most classic volcano of our planet. None of the routes to Cotopaxi can be called boring - each of them required crampons, ropes and ice axes that can help you to climb steep ice slopes and traverse deep crevasses.

Cotopaxi is an active stratovolcano and rises 5897 meters above sea level. It is the second highest peak in Ecuador and one of the highest active volcanoes in the world (ranked among the top 5 at the beginning of 2015). Volcanologists began to monitor Cotopaxi closely since 1738 and for these period they more than 50 eruptions have been recorded. Some of them were fatal to the surrounding cities. The volcano is a part of the so-called Ring of Fire although geographically it belongs to the Cordillera Oriental of the Ecuadorian Andes. It has one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world, which starts at the height of 5 000 meters. In the late 20th century, summiting Cotopaxi became a major tourist draw. Climbs can be attempted year round and the largest number of climbers come in December and January. During these months every day more than 100 climbers try to conquer Cotopaxi. The volcano summit is a two crater rims that seem to be nested within one another. The highest point is located in the northern part of the outer crater.
