The Nordwand, or north face, of this peak in the Swiss Alps is an objective legendary among mountaineers for its danger. Though it was first climbed in 1938, the north face of the Eiger continues to challenge climbers of all abilities with both its technical difficulties and the heavy rockfall that rakes the face. The difficulty and hazards have earned the Eiger’s north face the nickname Mordwand, or Murder Wall.
  • Description Edit •  Add / Share you knowledge with mates

Eiger rises above the valley of Grindelwald Grund 3000m and very affected brought by the north-west of bad weather. Eiger is composed entirely of limestone. In recent years, climbing becoming more dangerous because of the increasing incidents of landslides, rockfalls and avalanches, which is partly due to the melting of the glacier. It is not very hard to reach the summit, either, since there is a walk-up route from a nearby high-altitude underground train station. The extreme notoriety of the Eiger comes exclusively from its huge, imposing north face, probably the single most famous face of any mountain in the world. The Eiger Nordwand ("north wall") is 1700m / 5500 ft of almost vertical rock and ice, swept by near constant rockfall, and kept cold and dark by lack of direct sun.
