    90% of climbers are visiting Great Caucasus for summiting Mount Elbrus - the highest point of Europe and a part of the "7 Summits". Dykhtau included in the list of "7 Second Summits", but it is more technically demanding top. 5-thousand meters in the Greater Caucasus are in a list of "Caucasus 5000-meter Peaks". In general this mountain system is has a huge variety of routes, well-studied area during Soviet times, a lot of guid-books, but mostly in Russian.

    Great Caucasus - is extended mountain system, which together with the Lesser Caucasus mountain system are known as the Caucasus Mountains. Greater Caucasus is traditionally divided into 3 parts (for length): Western Caucasus (from the Black Sea to the foothills of Mount Elbrus), Central Caucasus (from Elbrus to Kazbek) and the eastern Caucasus (Kazbek to the Caspian Sea). Great Caucasus - a region with great glaciation. More than half of the glaciation of the Greater Caucasus are concentrated in the Central Caucasus (50% of the number and 70% of the area of glaciation).
