Climbers and hikers mostly come to Cordillera de Merida to climb Pico Bolívar (4981 meters) - the highest mountain in Venezuela. This spectacular and challenging climb is best done over 6 days to minimize the risk of altitude sickness. It is a round trip from city of Mérida following a U-shaped high mountain route known as La Travesia and is intended for confident climbers with technical mountaineering experience. Crampons and ice-axe are necessary during the wet season (December-March).

The Sierra de la Culata and Sierra Nevada de Merida are the biggest ridges in the Cordillra de Merida.
