Kilimanjaro is the highest and most famous mountain in Africa. A massive dormant volcano, it rises isolated from east African savannahs. No other mountain in the world rises so high so alone, with no range of other peaks for support.
  • Description Edit •  Add / Share you knowledge with mates

Kilimanjaro rises above the plateau Masai, which is 900 meters above sea level. Massif is a potentially active stratovolcano with three large craters - Kibo, Mawenzi, Shira. Over 250 smaller cones are located around these three peaks. Currently, the array has 17 glaciers located on the tops of Kibo and Mawenzi. It is possible to climb Kilimanjaro from Kenya, as the mountain stands on the border of Tanzania and Kenya. However, by agreement between the two countries ascents allowed by Tanzanian side only. On the part of Kenya there is no necessary infrastructure and there are police checkpoints, aimed to prevent unauthorized climbing. There are 6 routes approved by TANAPA standard to climb up the Kibo, and one special route for the descent. Besides those routes there are some more, which are more routs foe advanced climbers, such as the "Polish Glacier", "western gap" or Barranco, that require special equipment.
