Climbing the Matterhorn is on the 'must do' list of both aspiring and experienced mountaineers alike.  The Matterhorn has become an iconic emblem of the Swiss Alps and the Alps in general. Since the end of the 19th century, when railways were built, it attracted more and more visitors and climbers. Each summer a large number of mountaineers try to climb the Matterhorn via the northeast Hörnli ridge, the most popular route to the summit.
  • Description Edit •  Add / Share you knowledge with mates

The most recognized mountain on the European continent. With a near perfect pyramid, its absolute symmetry demarcates the exquisite nature of this beautiful mountain. Looking from Zermatt, the peak looks nothing short of terrifying! Compared to most alpine peaks it looks impossibly steep and uncompromising. But on the other hand it is a popular mountain which is climbed on a daily basis by people without vast amounts of experience. The route is both complex and loose, so it is a necessity that the leader knows the mountain well. We would never advise attempting the peak without using a qualified guide.

The Matterhorn was one of the last great Alpine peaks to be

climbed and its first ascent marked the end of the golden age of

alpinism. It was made in 1865 by a party led by Edward

Whymper and ended disastrously when four of its members fell

to their deaths on the descent. The north face was not
