Apennines is a mountain system consisting of parallel smaller chains. They are mostly verdant, although there is a glacier one side of the highest peak - Corno Grande, and it is the only glacier in the Apennines. Snow may fall and lay in this mountains from October to May. The eastern slopes down to the Adriatic Sea are steep, while the western slopes form foothills on which most of peninsular Italy's cities are located.
