The Saint Elias Mountains are the highest coastal mountains in the world. They contain Canada's highest and most massive peaks. Mount Logan is only slightly lower than McKinley. The Saint Elias Mountains are exceed the Himalayas in vertical relief, with hundreds of sharp ice-clad peaks rising dramatically above sea-level glaciers. Weather conditions adds an extra challenge to ascents, besides the relief. The most popular peaks for expeditions are Sanford, Blackburn, Bona and St. Elias, because of their elevations over 16,000 feet. Many other peaks are equally challenging. Some have never been climbed.

The mountains are divided by the Duke Depression in two parst - there are higher ranges on the west (Icefield Ranges) and lower more rounded (Kluane Ranges) to the east. Although most of the range is non-volcanic, portions at the western end near the Wrangell Mountains are volcanic. This region includes two major stratovolcanoes - Mount Churchill and Mount Bona. West of the Saint Elias Mountains is the still-active Fairweather Fault. The climate is harsh and the weather is changeable, due to the proximity of the shoreline and the northern latitude.
