Ecuador, Jewel of the Andes, is a paradise for the mountaineer. Perhaps nowhere else on earth does the combination of such high mountains and easy accessibility exist in such close proximity. Over 15 years, I have developed what I consider to be the ultimate Ecuador climbing program. Trip itinerary offers the best in acclimatization, cultural experience and great accommodations, all while climbing the most spectacular volcano in Ecuador - Mount Chimborazo (20,701 ft/6,310m). Climb is required prior mountaineering experience including experience with ice axe, crampons, and glacier travel.

Winner of the prestigious American Golden Piton and European Grolla d’Or awards. Have organized and led more than 50 successful mountain expeditions all over the world, including Mount Everest (2 times), Denali (3 times), Ama-Dablam, Aconcagua (3 times), Carstenz Pyramid, Vinson Massif and many other popular mountains in unique and remote locations.
Ecuador, Chimborazo Province
Summit Chimborazo – Riobamba.
We start the climb at about midnight following the Stübel glacier until it joins the Castle Saddle (5,500m /18,044 ft.). This new variant to the normal Castle Ridge route is free from the danger of rock fall making it a much safer line. From the Stübel Camp, it normally takes eight hours to get to the Whymper summit from where you will enjoy one of the best views in Ecuador. To the east and south-east: El Altar which is the most difficult mountain to climb in Ecuador and the active volcanoes Tungurahua and Sangay. To the north and north-east: mountains like the Ilinizas, Antisana and the famous Cotopaxi. The descent to the Stübel Camp takes three hours. The Abraspungo Hostelry gives us beautiful Andean scenery at the end of our climb.

We met in Quito and made the requisite tourist visits to the Mitad del Mundo (the Equator line), and beautiful historic Old Town Quito. It was my first visit to Ecuador and I was really impressed with the history and architecture of Ecuador, and particularly the old colonial areas of Quito. We had three main climbing objectives, and the highest was Chimborazo (6,310 m / 20,702 ft). It was a great trip overall, we did stand on top of all of the three volcanoes we had planned to climb. I was truly impressed with the natural beauty, culture and history of Ecuador. We got to spend a bunch of days climbing and hiking in the beautiful Ecuadorian Andes, visited some really amazing places, and we all came home in one piece!
