About
Sierra Negra & Pico de Orizaba (OMG-08)
6 Days
Note: Season to climb the Volcanoes of Mexico: from October to December and from January to March. You can select your dates.
Sierra Negra is a volcano located in Puebla, Mexico, near the state boundary with Veracruz. At its summit is located the Great Alfonso Serrano Millimeter Telescope (GMT), the largest radio telescope in the world in its frequency range. With its 4580 meters above sea level, it is the fifth highest peak in Mexico. However, because it is adjacent to the much higher Pico de Orizaba or Citlaltépetl (5610 masl), the Sierra Negra is often overlooked and excluded from mountaineering guides.
Pico de Orizaba volcano (Volcán Citlaltépetl) is a large active stratovolcano, Mexico's highest mountain and the highest volcano of North America. It is located at the southern end of Citlaltépetl–Cofre de Perote Volcanic Range, and the only volcano in this area with historic activity.
