Mount Kazbek is a dormant stratovolcano last erupted in 650 B.C. First climbed by british mountaineers Douglas Freshfield, A. W. Moore, C. C. Tucker and François Devouassoud in 1868, now it has become an extremely popular destination among mountaineers. The area around Mount Kazbegi includes beech forests, subalpine forests and alpine meadows. The ascent itself is very interesting because of the contrasts: within one day you will move from the alpine meadows zone to the snow line; you will sunbathe on the snow during the day and the spend the evening enjoying the sunset while sipping hot tea.

Сlimbing Kazbek is not only a great start for climbing, but also an opportunity to introduce yourself Georgia, a wonderful hospitable country. The high season on the mountain is from the middle of June till the end of September. Climbing during spring is not recommended, because of the severe winter conditions that still remain on the mountain, and the weather instability. As for the routes, there are two main ones on Mount Kazbek. The one from the Russian side is more complicated and diverse. This is why we recommend to plan your ascent from the Georgian side, as it provides good logistics and maximum security services.

Weather

Most of the days during the climbing season are sunny. There might be short storms, but they usually last no more than one day. Temperature in Stepantsminda is +20°C … + 25°C, on top of the mountain it 's -5°C … 0°C. The glacier during this period is mostly open, and all the cracks are visible. Often there are calm days when it is possible to sunbathe, even at the top.

Telephone Communications

Telephone Communications

The reception is steady from Stepantsminda to Betlemi Hut. The rest of the time, the connection is very weak or absent altogether. There will be reception on the summit day, but 4G works well in all the camps.
