Mountain Little Ararat (3 896 m / 12 782 ft)

Little Ararat, also known as Mount Sis or Lesser Ararat, is the sixth tallest peak in Turkey. Despite being dwarfed by its higher and far more famous neighbor, Little Ararat is a significant volcano of its own with an almost perfectly symmetrical, conical form and smooth constructional slopes. It rises about 1,200 m (4,000 ft) above the saddle connecting it with the main peak.

If you want to go there, you need a guide and a car that will take you at the height of over 2000 metres above sea level. From there you can gat to the foot of the volcano in 2-3 hours. Then the mountain seems ours. Unfortunately, it is not so - the ascent is really hard because of the steep profile and slipping stones. After 2 or 3 steps we slip down with the stones. The climb is arduous but not impossible. On the top there is a small lake and commemorative stone with a carved inscription on it.

It is a large satellite cone located on the eastern flank of the massive Mount Ararat, less than five miles west of Turkey's border with Iran.

By car (van) from Dogobayazit to the mountain . It takes about 1 hour from Dogobayazit city to the region . Half of the road is gravel . From the end of the gravel road (2200 m) you have a 4-5 hour easy climbing (treking) trough a grassland with a low slope to the first camp .

Mount Little Ararat is located in the border area and a permission of the Turkish authorities is required. If you are organizing a trip through a travel agency, you must apply for a permit no later than 30 days before the expedition.

Until 1932, Little Ararat was on the Iranian side of the border. In 1932, Turkey and Iran had a border exchange agreement where Iran left this mountain in return for a town in Van.

 

The last activity on the mountain was a major earthquake in July 1840 centered around the Ahora Gorge, a northeast trending chasm that drops 1,825 metres (6,000 ft) from the top of the mountain.
