Mount Giluwe (4 368 m / 14 331 ft)

Giluve - tallest volcano in Australia and Oceania. Giluwe has the distinction of being the highest volcano on the Australian continent, and is thus one of the Volcanic Seven Summits. The route goes through jungle, grassland, past innumerable tarns and lakes. The climb is magnificent but it’s wild and remote. It is a journey back in time where machetes cut the way to the sound of musical tribal singing, and all the ideas of western comfort are left behind.

Mount Giluwe is situated in Papua New Guinea. However, this island is situated on the Indo-Australian tectonic plate, so Giluwe is considered the highest volcano on the Australian continent. It is an old shield volcano with vast alpine grasslands. The last eruption was more than 200 thousand years ago. Ancient volcanic plugs form its two summits, with the central peak the highest (4368 m) and an east peak (4,300 m) about 2 kilometres away. Volcano rise to 4367 meters, so even the close proximity to the equator doesn’t make the weather particularly warm – there is snow on top of the mountain and strong rain showers are possible. The ascent is not complicated, but it is an exciting adventure. The main difficulties for her expedition to Giluwe are its distant location and wild environment.

It is located in the Southern Highlands province. 600 km away from Port Moresby.

Flight from Port Moresby to Mount Hagan, then by car to the station Kaguba, near Tambuli, where the route begins.
