The North Ridge of Kahiltna Dome is an excellent training climb in preparation for Denali's West Buttress route. In many ways the Kahiltna Dome course mirrors a Denali climb: it is outfitted the same, flies to the same landing strip, and shares the lower portion of the West Buttress route.

Kahiltna Dome is one of the Alaska classic. It offers excellent climbing up the three-mile- long North East Ridge. The entire climb offers superb views of the West Buttress of Denali and Mount Foraker. The easiest summit route appears to be the north ridge. This expedition starts at Denali's West Buttress base camp, 7200 feet on the Kahiltna Glacier.

Located in the central, highest part of the Alaskan mountains, 11 kilometers from Denali, 200 km from Anchorage, 85 of Talkeetna. It is separated from McKinley by a deep glacial valley occupied by Kahiltna Glacier, with Kahiltna Pass at its head. It is described as an ice-covered dome, the 56th-highest peak in Alaska.

Transfer from Anchorage to Talkeetna (70-90$) one way. With air taxi from the airport near Talkeetna village. Several companies - carriers are operating there. Round-trip ticket will cost approximately 400-500 dollars.
