Mountain Lassen Peak (3 187 m / 10 456 ft)

The region has a highly developed tourist infrastructure allowing to make climbs in the best possible conditions 12 months of the year: the starting point of many routes can be easily reached by car.

Lassen Peak, or Mount Lassen is the southernmost active volcano in Cascade mountains, and along with St. Helens, the only one with a record of eruptions during 20th century in the United States. Mountain has distinguishing climatic features being the snowiest one in California with the average annual snowfall of 1.6 m. Glaciers are absent on the mountain but snow is thick enough to form stable snow caps. In summer there are often cases of serious thunderstorms and mountain peak attracts plenty of lightning strikes. Being the second highest mountain in Northern California after Shasta, Lassen is year-round object of interest for climbers – its accessible slopes allow to make climbs all year, with adjustments for climatic situation at the time of the trip. Mountain crowned with one of the largest volcanic domes on earth. In the summer some climbing routes are shorter than the winter due to snow conndition. The most popular climbing route has 2 km vertical gain and 8 km length. The ongoing activity of the volcano manifests today in a rather moderate and tamed way: around the mountain you may find a number of hot springs, geysers, sulfur pools and plenty of Lassen Peak past activity traces.

Northern part of the California state, Shasta County, Lassen Volcanic National Park, approximately 100 km from the city of Redding.

From Sacramento by train, bus or car to Redding and then by car to the national park "Lassen Volcanic National Park".

Passes and permits are purchased at the spot - from local rangers or representatives of the National Park Authority.

Lassen Peak is one of the most interesting climbs from an aesthetic point of view - during the climb (especially in summer) you will see many unforgettable views of the area destroyed by the last eruption (volcanic landscapes).
