Though Mount Shasta is not considered particularly difficult to climb certain routes under difficult weather conditions may represent a serious challenge to even the most experienced professional climbers. Usually climbing here is practiced during the period from May to October, but even in summer weather can substantially increase the climbing level. Keep in mind that out of the more than 15,000 attempts to reach the summit each year, only a third are successful. There are huge selection of programs visiting the mountain, which include climbing, tent vacation, rafting, horseback riding, cycling and fishing.

Mount Shasta is a stratovolcano, which is a part of the Cascade Mountains located in California, USA. The height of its peak of 4317 m allows it to be included in the list of California's fourteeners - state's list of mountains higher than 14 thousand feet. The volcano is classified as sleeping, its next eruption is a matter of time. On the surface of the mountain are seven glaciers extending mainly along the northern and eastern slopes. Shasta offers a huge selection of routes leading to several summits from the most technically simple, requiring no special skills or equipment (Avalanche Gully on the southern slope), to very tough routes that satisfy the demands of the most advanced climbers. On the tops of mountains climbers may feel a characteristically unpleasant smell of sulfur, which is the result of continuing volcanic activity of the mountain. From the top of the mountain peaks a characteristic view opens similar to the one from an airplane: the high altitude and complete absence of adjacent mountains, the nearest of which is located 500 miles from Mount Shasta.
