Full description

Acatenango is a stratovolcano in Guatemala, close to the city of Antigua. The volcano has two peaks, Pico Mayor (Highest Peak) and Yepocapa (3,987mt/ 13080.71ft) which is also known as Tres Hermanas (Three Sisters).

Acatenango is joined with Volcán de Fuego and collectively the volcano complex is known as La Horqueta. For visitors to Antigua in Guatemala; Acatenango Volcano and the neighbouring Volcan de Fuego (Fire Volcano) can be an irresistible adventure.

While it would be unsafe and irresponsible to hike the active Volcan de Fuego, it is possible to hike to the summit of Acatenango and watch Fuego erupt from a safe distance. It is a tough hike up steep slopes with loose volcanic rocks and the altitude can be a challenge for some. There are different options, 1 day or 2 days tours available from Antigua. To get the most from the hike, it is best to spend the night on the volcano, so that it is possible to see Fuego erupt at night, when it is most impressive.

We started on an ascent that lasts approximately 6hrs. Upon arrival at the base camp, we will rest with views of the Guatemalan fire belt, the Pacific Ocean and the imposing volcanoes of water and the active volcano of fire. the next day at 4am we set off to the summit located at 3987mts / 1308071ft. to admire the sunrise from the highest point of the volcano. You must take into account that the temperatures can drop considerably in a matter of minutes, as well as unpredictable climatic variations. It is important to wear appropriate clothing in cold weather, which often falls below the freezing point. humidity and wind are factors to consider.

You must carry 4lts of water as a minimum, as well as extra clothes and have good physical condition to climb it. It will be an adventure waiting for you .....
