Climb up the main gate to the South Patagonian Icefield. This is a technical trekking – mountaineering itinerary with the main goal of summiting the Gorra Blanca Peak though just getting up to the pass right in the border between Argentine and Chile is a challenge itself. Most of the trek takes place on snow and ice and requires the use of crampons, snowshoes, ropes, etc.
The Gorra Blanca summit is a super interesting 4 days mountain ascent and a real challenge due to the changing and sometimes extreme weather conditions. Climbing the 2907 summit is not particularly difficult but it implies going thru the Marconi pass, the gate to the south Patagonian icefield. The itinerary is spectacular from the beginning including scramble a rock section and glacier traverse.
Previous day: In the afternoon previous to the ascent we will have a meeting in El Chaltén to check the equipment, get informed about the last details and clear up any doubts that may arise.
Argentina, El Chaltén, Santa Cruz Province, Lago Argentino Department
El Chalten - River Electrico
This morning a vehicle will take us to the bridge over the Eléctrico River, located 20km north - west of the town, where the expedition begins.
We hike for two hours through a forest landscape. Once we arrive at Pieda de Fraile campsite, we follow the Electrico River through a glacial valley. While the vegetation is sparse in this area, the views are incredible. We continue hiking, fording the Pollone River, in the direction of Marconi Pass before stopping for the night.
Distance: 12-15km
Elevation: +270m
Trekking: 6-8 hours
Marconi Pass - Southern Patagonian Ice Field
At first light we break-camp and set out towards the Marconi Glacier. We cross old moraine fields until reaching the toe of the glacier. Here we trek up the glacier until nearing the Marconi pass – entrance to the Southern Patagonian Ice Field right at the border between Argentina and Chile. This will be surely the Expedition’s toughest day.
The climb in altitude today is approximately 800 meters over moraine and glacial terrain, and given the shape and orientation of the valley, the winds experienced can be very severe. Today ends when we enter the Ice Field.
Distance: 10 km
Elevation: 800 m
Trekking: 7-8 hours
Summit Gorra Blanca
The summit attempt day has arrived. If we have good weather conditions, we’ll leave very early before sunrise to climb up the Gorra Blanca all the way up on snow and ice, it is a beautiful and enjoyable glacier traverse. Depending on the glacier conditions we might need to use crampons or snow shoes. From the summit and just after the necessary moments for pleasure and pictures we’ll return to the refuge or camp for a deserved resting night.
Distance: 22 km
Elevation: 1000m
Climbing: 6-7 hours
