This is a challenging traverse that requires some technical experience to explore the solitude at the foot of the Fitz Roy range. In this trip we wll see the fantastic walls of Guillaumet, Mermoz, and Fitz Roy. And we will cross medium technical level pass - Guillaumet Pass.
El Chaltén - Piedra Negra
We leave El Chaltén on our vehicle that takes us 20km away to the bridge over the Electrico River. We start trekking through a forest along a very easy path until arriving at the Piedra del Fraile refuge. From here the steep trek begins till we reach our campsite at Piedra Negra. We will get superb views to the lower valleys and looking to the east the big granite walls from the Guillaumet to the Mermoz and Fitz roy peaks. A superb scenery 360º around.
Height gain: 950 m.
Trek time: 6-7 hours
Intensity: Medium-High
Guillaumet Pass
Today we ascend towards the Guillaumet Pass, first ascending on snow and lose rocks and then scrambling a rocky section. Once at the pass the Piedras Blancas glacier and the approach to the range will astonish us. From here we start a beautiful glacial traverse and subsequently descending to our next camp, the Superior Pass. Another spectacular location.
Height gain: 450 m. Height drop: 1350 m.
Trek time: 8/10 hours
Glacier De los Tres - El Chalten
The day is more relaxed so we mostly descend all the way to the town. We begin walking over the glacier De los Tres, pass by the lagoon and then enter in the forest finishing in the town of El Chaltén.
Height drop: 850 m.
Trek time: 7/8 hours
Intensity: High
