Most people, including a good percentage of the tourists that throng Zermatt, do not realize that the Matterhorn is not the highest peak in the Swiss Alps. That honor belongs to the Dufourspitze, the crowning peak of the Monte Rosa massif, located a few miles east of the Matterhorn and rising just over 150 m/500 feet higher.

The Monte Rosa Massif has the highest mountains in Switzerland and comprises the second in height after Mont Blanc in the Alps: the Dufourspitze, which is named in honor of Henri Dufour an army general and co-founder of the Red Cross. There are also 6 other peaks in the Monte Rosa Massif. It is a long and challenging climb over 3 days that is normally approached via the Monte Rosa hut and the rocky West Ridge. The summit day is a 7-hour climb across snow and ice slopes of up to 40 degrees and with an elevation gain of almost 1,900m. Dufourspitze is not considered as a difficult mountain on its main routes, but you must pay attention to acclimatization and be fully equipped with ax, rope, crampons and warm and wind resistant clothes.
