Mountain Meru (4 566 m / 14 980 ft)

Mount Meru is the country's second highest mountain and one of ten highest mountains in Africa. Climbing here is not as popular as Kilimanjaro ascent, but no less interesting and even surpasses it in the beauty of the route.

Meru - is an active stratovolcano and in the list of 10 highest peaks in Africa. At the moment the mountain has two peaks: Meru, that is also called the peak of Socialism (4562.13 m), and Little Meru (3820 m). From the west side volcano has a conical shape. On the eastern slope is a huge caldera 5 km width. The bottom of the crater is at 2400 m, and the ash cone rises to 3667 m. Breakage between the top of the mountain and ash cone reaches 2000 m in height and is one of the highest cliffs in the world. Lava cones are located on all sides of the volcano, at the bottom of the northern slope of the volcano is emerging. Mount Meru is the topographic centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, and also monkeys and leopards. Mount Meru 3 days hike is a strenuous climb and requires good shape, experience of long trekking and had some high altitude.

Meru is located 70 kilometres (43 mi) west of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

By car / bus about 5 hours drive from Nairobi to Arusha and 1.5 hours from the airport to the city of Arusha Kilimanjaro, or 45 minutes before Mosha.

Most recently Meru had a minor eruption in 1910.
