Mont Stanley (5 109 m / 16 762 ft)

Mount Stanley is third highest in Africa (after Mount Kilimanjaro and Kenya). Ruwenzori are the few tectonic mountains, located in Africa. They are the legendary Mountains of the Moon, clouded in mystery and drizzly mist, which are referred to ancient geography as the source of the Nile. Here are some of the highest mountains in Africa - 4th and 5th in height. At the top there are some glaciers, which are closely observed by scientists - as snow of Ruwenzori is rapidly melting.

Ngaliema or Mount Stanley is the highest mountain of both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, and the third highest in Africa. Mt. Stanley consists of two twin summits and several lower peaks. The mountain has glaciers. At the moment the glaciers begin higher than Elena Hut (4600 m). Climbing requires the use of ropes and crampons.

Located on the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the heart of the Ruwenzori mountains.

Margherita Peak is named after Queen Margherita of Italy.

 

Mount Stanley is named for the journalist and explorer, Sir Henry Morton Stanley. It is part of the Ruwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO world Heritage Site.
