The beautiful, snow capped peak of Mount Kenya is the second highest point in Africa. It is a challenging and popular destination for trekkers and climbers. There are two types of routes – trekking and climbing ones.

Mount Kenya is a stratovolcano created approximately 3 million years after the opening of the East African rift. Amount the main peak - Batian Peak - it has three sub peaks. There are 11 small glaciers lying on slopes of Mount Kenya massif - the remnants of once existing ice cap. There are three principal trekking routes on Mount Kenya that approach the base of the technical climbing routes and the popular destination of sub peak Point Lenana. There are several other trekking routes on the mountain (Timau, Meru or Burguret Routes) but they are not frequently done.

Mount Kenya located in central part of the country, about 200km north of Nairobi, 300 from Kilimanjaro.

Accessible by road from Nairobi by a variety of transport options. Buses, taxi or a hire car will get you to the close to mountain on tarred roads to the nearest town: Nanyuki (for Naro Moru and Sirimon routes) or Meru (for Chogoria route). The closest commercial airstrip to the park is at Nanyuki

The first European who discover the volcano in 1849, was Johann Ludwig Krapf. However, the scientific community was sceptical about his reports about the mountain covered with snow located so close to the equator. Confirmed the existence of Mount Kenya in 1883, and in 1887 it was first studied.
