The route to Island Peak is amazing. It's one of the most beautiful trekking routes in the world - Solu Khumbu gorge. Because of the proximity to Everest there is no shortage of infrastructure. This is an adventure for those who are experienced in climbing and wouldn't be satisfied by walking around one of the trekking routes in Nepal to Everest Base Camp. This journey is a chance to feel the spirit of Himalayan expeditions and make an ascent to the one of the Himalayan giants.

Island Peak is a trekking peak in Himalaya, Nepal. Title "trekking peak" is given by the Nepalese government to 14 popular Himalayan mountains. But it definition doesn't mean "easy". The route to the Island Peak summit includes steep slopes and sharp ridge. Crampons, ice-axe and ropes are necessary. From Dingboche the mountain doesn't look very impressive because it looks very small next to one of the largest mountain faces in the world - the South Face of Lhotse. However on close inspection it reveals itself to be an attractive summit with a highly glaciated West Face rising from the Lhotse Glacier. It has a classic beautiful ridge leading to the summit.

Island Peak is located 6 km (3.7 miles) south from Everest. It is actually an extension of the ridge coming down off the south end of the eight-thousander Lhotse Shar.

Flight to Lukla (2 840 m) from Kathmandu. Trekking from Lukla to Chukkung village. From Chukkung to Base Camp is up to 4 hours walking distance.

You can get all the climbing and National Park permits by yourself in the Nepal Tourism Ministry or ask help from numbers of local travel agencies.

Island Peak was named in 1951 by Eric Shipton's party since it appears as an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche village. The peak was later renamed in 1983 to Imja Tse but Island Peak remains the popular choice.
