90% of climbers are visiting Great Caucasus for summiting Mount Elbrus - the highest point of Europe and a part of the "7 Summits". Dykhtau included in the list of "7 Second Summits", but it is more technically demanding top. 5-thousand meters in the Greater Caucasus are in a list of "Caucasus 5000-meter Peaks". Great Caucasus - is extended mountain system, which together with the Lesser Caucasus mountain system are known as the Caucasus Mountains.
Greater Caucasus is traditionally divided into 3 parts (for length): Western Caucasus (from the Black Sea to the foothills of Mount Elbrus), Central Caucasus (from Elbrus to Kazbek) and the eastern Caucasus (Kazbek to the Caspian Sea).

Located between the Black and Caspian Seas. Extends from the area of Anapa and Taman peninsula to Apsheron peninsula on the coast of the Caspian Sea near Baku.
Greater Caucasus Mountain Range is a the state border of the Russian Federation and Georgia and Azerbaijan.

• According to the Greek mythology, the first who was on top of Mount Elbrus (in Greek mythology the mount called Strobilus), was Prometheus. His chained there by order of Zeus, because he stole fire from the gods and gave it to mankind. However, this legend is refer to many different peaks, and Mount Elbrus is among them.

 

• Hut on 4200 meters was built in 1939 and at that moment was the highest alpine hotel in the world.
