7 DAYS MACHAME ROUTE ITINERARY
The Machame route, known as the "Whiskey" route, is now the most popular route on the mountain.
Machame approaches from the southwest and descends using Mweka, rewarding climbers with views of the expansive Shira Plateau, an optional scramble up Lava Tower, a climb up the Great Barranco Wall, and a traverse underneath Kilimanjaro's Southern Icefield. The descent occurs on the Mweka route, total distance 62km
Normally , April and May are the months with long rains and should be avoided.
The best Months for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro are January, February ,March, July, Augost, September and October, November is usually short rains but it is not often rains all the days so Climbing is possible.
Day 1 – Arrive at JRO/ Arusha:
Arrival in Kilimanjaro International Airport, Meet and assist at the airport and after going through Immigration, Baggage Claim and Customs, Transfer to Planet Lodge Arusha or similar hotel in order to stay overnight at on Bed and Breakfast basis. We will gather in the evening for a pre–climbing briefing and climbing equipments check. We will also confirm that you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance as well.
Day 2 Machame Gate 1,640m/5380ft to Machame camp 2,850m/9350ft Distance: 11km, Time 5-7 hours
After breakfast we drive from Arusha town to the Machame gate ,that will take about one and half hours, at the gate you will have fiew minutes organising your self while the Guide paying the park fee, before start hiking .
Today we go throw the Tropical rain forest which is the home for different species of bed and Colubas Monkey,
Day 3: Machame Camp 2,850m/9,350ft to Shira Camp 3,810m/12,500ft Distance 5km, Time 5-6 hours
After breakfast we start hiking at 8:30, today is short day but steep, especially the first section of two hours, we go from rain forest to heather zone, as it is a short day we going to have hot lunch at the camp, but carry few snakes with you
Day 4:Shira Camp 3,810m/12,500ft to Barranco camp 3,976m/13,044ft Distance 10km, Time 7 hours
After breakfast we start hiking at 8:30, today is a long day with a gradual ascent , we will switch zones from heather zone to the alpine desert, we going to have lunch at Lava Tower Camp 4,630/15,190ft, after lunch if the weather is good you can climb the Lava tower,( optional)
After having lunch we proceed with our hike to baranco camp, it is only two hours downhill from lava tower to the Barranco camp which is a garden for the endemic plant of Kilimanjaro ,giant Senesio ,and lobelian is also good day for acclimatization as we go high and sleep low
Day 5, Barranco Camp, (3,976m/13,044ft) to Karanga Camp (3,995m/13,106ft) Distance 5km, Time 4 hours
Today is a short but challenge day, the first section after breakfast is a steep climb to the Great Barranco Wall, it is not technical but you going to need to use your hands sometimes to lift yourself up,
After you made it to the top of the great Barranco wall , you take a short rest and enjoy view before you proceed with the middle section , which will be down and uphill before get to the last section of the day which a big downhill to the Karanga Valley and a very steep but short ascend to Karanga Camp
Day 6, Karanga Camp (3, 995m/13,106ft)to Barafu Camp (4,673m/15,331ft) Distance 4km, Time 4 hours
This is a short day so we sleep in , we will have breakfast at 8:30 and start hiking at 9:30, the first section of the day start with a gradual ascend for about one hours before you get in the middle section which is less steep for one hour, the last section is gradual steep before reaching Barafu camp for Lunch and Overnight
Day 7: Barafu Camp 4,673m/15,331fts to Uhuru peak 5,895m/19,340ft to Mweka camp 2,850M/9,263ft.Distance from Barafu to Uhuru peak 5km, Time 6-7 hours, Distance from Uhuru peak to Mweka 12km, Time 7 hours
Today is the Summit day, we start hiking at mid night, you will need to use your head lump, slow but sure, one tep at a time( pole pole) the guide will be seting the right pace, we will be having short breaks atlist after every one hour, we will reach the Stella point( 5756m /18.884ft )around 5:00 in the morning
after a shot rest at stella pont , we continue with the hike to the summit (Uhuru Peak 5,895m/19,340fts) this section will take about one hour to one and half reach the top around 6:30pm enjoy the sunrise over mawenzi
After celebration and photos taking at the summit we start descending to Barafu for a short rest for 2 hours sleep, then eat lunch and keep descending to melinium camp or Mweka camp
Day 8, Mwka camp 2,850m/9,263ft to Mweka gate 1,800m/ 5,850ftDistance, 10km, Time 3 hours
This is by far the easiest day as it is downhill and the oxygen supply increase as you go down,
Today is the last day on the Mountain, is the day to say goodbye to the Mountain crew, after a short tipping and certificate celebration at the gate.
