The highest point of the Dhaulagiri Base Camp trek is the French Pass (5360 m). It is called so in honor of a french mountaineer Maurice Herzog. His expedition in 1950 was first to see the Hidden Valley from this pass. They were exploring this area looking for a possible route to the Dhaulagiri I (8167 m). However the route wasn't found and they decided to climb Annapurna I (8091 m). It became the first peak over 8000 m that was conquered.
