Cordillera Central (Colombia)

Several volcanoes elevated above 5000 meters are situated within the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes. The most popular are Nevado del Huila (5365 meters) and Nevado del Ruiz (5311 meters). The first one is the highest volcano of Colombia and after being dormant for more than 500 years, showed heavy signs of activity in 2007 and 2008. The Nevado del Ruiz has been active for about two million years and the current volcanic cone formed during the present eruptive period, which began 150 thousand years ago.
