September 28, 2010 Spanish athlete Kílian Jornet Burgada set a world record ascent in 5 hours 23 minutes and 50 seconds via Umbwe route. The descent was started immediately, and the he finished in Mweka, setting a record of descent-ascent from the park gate to the top of the mountain and back - up to 7 hours and 14 minutes. The previous record belonged to Andrey Puchinin from Kazakhstan - in 2009 in 5 hours 24 minutes 40 seconds via Marangu route.
