It is sad to inform that speleologist Pavel Demidov, the head of the expedition, which reached a record-holding depth of 2212 meters in the Veryovkina Cave in Russia, passed away on August, 23 in Abkhazia.
Pavel died while descending into an unexplored cave in the Arabica Mountain Range, part of the Gagra Ridge of the Western Caucasus.
The tragic incident took place on August, 23. Demidov went to the cave with his colleague Andrey Shumeyko. When the cavers found themselves at a depth of 305 meters, a large rock burst began. Shumeyko managed to get out, but Demidov remained under the stones.
An operation of retrieving of the body will begin on August, 26. The team will be led by known speleologist and Everest climber Denis Provalov.
Pavel Denisov was 49 years old. We express our condolences to Paul's family and friends.
