A 32-year-old climber from Sankhuwasabha district has set the new world record in speed climbing by successfully scaling two mountains above 8,000 metres in the spring climbing season.
Mingma Dorchi Sherpa, who stood atop the roof of the world on May 27 at 12:44 am, successfully climbed the world’s fourth highest peak on the same day. “Sherpa climbed Mt Everest and Mt Lhotse on May 27 within 6 hours 1 minute,” Gyanendra Shrestha, a liaison officer, confirmed. Sherpa scaled Mt Lhotse at 6:45 am after climbing Mt Everest on the same day, he added.
Besides, Sherpa from Makalu-5 also climbed Mt Makalu this season, Lakpa Sherpa, Managing Director at Pioneer Adventure, shared. “He has become the fastest climber to achieve the feat,” Sherpa claimed, referring to the GPS records captured by Khai Van Nguyen.
According to him, Mingma Dorchi scaled Mt Makalu, the world’s fifth highest peak, at 7:09 am on May 29.
Sherpa broke the fastest record of 10 hours 15 minutes for Mt Everest and Mt Lhotse held by former UK’s special forces member Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja in 2017. “We are also trying to get details on the past records held for the fastest consecutive ascents of Everest, Lhotse and Makalu”
Sherpa has already climbed Mt Everest for the fifth time as well as Mt K2 twice and other mountains. Sherpa said that he would provide the necessary evidence to the Guinness World Records as soon as possible for the official endorsement of his record.
Company chairman Pasang Sherpa said that Mingma Dorchi along with Pioneer Everest Expedition members including Yuan Li and Yulong He from China, Adrian Laza from Romania, Chiao-Yu Chan and Wen-Yi Zeng from Taiwan, Mirza Ali from Pakistan, Sagar Kasana, Milind Dhondiba Raskar, Hitendra Chandrakant Mahajan and Mahendra Chandrakant Mahajan from India, Jeremy Tong Zhi Hao from Singapore and Donald Lynn Cash from US also scaled Mt Everest this season.
